MEDIA MOVEMENT: BOSTON SPORTSWRITER PUTS HIMSELF OUT THERE

Thursday, January 6, 2011

In a refreshingly honest and poignant article out of Boston of all places, sportswriter Steve Buckley used his column to do something he probably should have done a long time ago, he announced that he was gay.  The fact that this is still news, shows how far behind we are at accepting homosexuality as a lifestyle, especially in the world of sports.

I am sure that people will say “how unprofessional” it is to use his public forum to air private news, but on the contrary, the sports world needs to hear this and a city as conservative as Boston could use it even more. If a guy obsessed with the Godfather (I and II only) and the ’67 Red Sox can admit that he’s gay, hopefully it will encourage more honesty on the subject in the world of sports.  photo via Boston Herald
